Faith Ringgold and the Black Arts Movement

Faith Ringgold and the Black Arts Movement In-Person / Online

Art Talk With Prof. Dennis Raverty

Faith Ringgold died last April at the age of 93. She was a pioneering figure in the Black Arts Movement of the 1970s, where she faced not only the challenges of being a black artist in the exclusive New York art scene, but also had to deal with the prejudices of her black male colleagues. We’ll place her work within the tradition of quilt- making among African American crafts persons, which can be traced back to 19th century slave art and even older West African ceremonial banners.
