Van Gogh: The Roulin Family Portraits

Van Gogh: The Roulin Family Portraits In-Person

An Art Talk With Professor Thomas Germano

During Vincent van Gogh’s time in Arles, he created a number of portraits of a local family: the postman Joseph Roulin; his wife Augustine; and their children. Van Gogh’s expressive portrayals of them reveal a certain intimacy, while letters written by Roulin bring to life the deep bond of friendship the men shared. The Boston MFA will host the first ever exhibition of works centered around this theme, “The Roulin Family,” from March 30 to September 7, 2025.
