Great Zimbabwe: The Lost City in the Heart of Africa

Great Zimbabwe: The Lost City in the Heart of Africa In-Person / Online

History Studies With Prof. Ron Brown

The Europeans explored and colonized the continent of Africa beginning shortly after Columbus “discovered” the continents of North and South America. The Portuguese, Dutch, French and English colonial authorities firmly believed that the Black peoples of Africa were the sons of Ham and as such were cursed by God, practiced pagan religions, were inferior to the White race, and destined to be slaves. But when the Europeans discovered the lost city of Great Zimbabwe deep in the heart of Africa, they discovered a marvelous, abandoned city of stone. How could such pagan, cursed, inferior people have built such a city? Certain thinkers began to rewrite the history of Africa and argued that the continent was as enlightened, creative, glorious as the Europeans.
